Red Winged Blackbird
Description
The male Red-winged Blackbird is a solid black bird except for the orange and yellow patch on his shoulders.
The female has a brown crown and a brown streak that runs across the eye. Her back, chest and belly is brown and white and she has a orange patch around her black beak. Her wings and tail feathers are striped with light brown and dark brown colors.
The male juvenile is covered in black with light brown and orange on the edge of his feathers. He has a yellow patch on his shoulder that will begin to show red as he enters adulthood.
They are a small to medium sized bird at 6 to 7 inches long and weigh about 1 to 3 ounces. They have a wingspan of 12 to 16 inches.
Habitat

Found year around all over the United States, you can find them mostly near bodies of fresh and saltwater such as lakes, ponds, and marshes in the summer. In winter they can be found in dry meadows, pastures and fields.
They typically build their nests low to the ground near marsh vegetation such as cattails.
Diet
The Red – Winged Blackbirds are known to pick insects from plants. They will also feed on small frogs, snails, worms, spiders, dragonflies, flies, moths, and butterflies.
They are also known to eat grains and wheat as well as seeds. Fruit and berries are also on their menu.
Facts
- The Red-winged Blackbird will build their nests in cattails, grasses, sage, or willow bushes.
- Males will protect up to 10 females even though the females clutch is that of mixed paternity.
- Their flocks can sometimes consist of millions of birds.
- They fly in single sex flocks during migration.
- The male is extremely aggressive when defending his territory.
